Deux (듀스) was a two-member hip-hop duo comprising Kim Sung-jae and Lee Hyun-do who debuted in 1993 and became one of the most formative acts in early Korean pop. Their music combined hip-hop, R&B, and dance production in a way that pushed Korean popular music past its trot-and-ballad defaults, and tracks like 여름 안에서 were genuine cultural events for Korean youth. The duo's career was cut short when Kim Sung-jae passed away on January 2, 1995 at age 23. His death was felt across Korean pop culture in a way that transcended fandom and cemented Deux's place in the collective memory of the era. Lee Hyun-do continued as a solo artist and remained an influential figure in Korean music.
